Some define their jobs as “work” and their departure to that job as “leaving for work.” For me, work is pleasure. Aside from leaving my family, I am open-hearted and -minded when on shooting assignment. This was the case during a recent trip to Austria, where I had the opportunity to shoot alongside Claire Morgan in multiple locations throughout the Alps. Clearly, I was struck by the beauty, mother nature’s impact, and the opportunity to learn about cultures. There is more than one way to cook, to interact, to wed, and to celebrate.
Beyond that, between you and me, I was inspired. These differences in way of life lent me a new appreciation — even for change. Which opened my heart to celebrate a friend — Cheryl. This kindred spirit has opened her home and her life to a man with a grave medical diagnosis. He has no one — or so he thought. Cheryl’s celebration of life at all its stages made me want to create a gift basket for her initial caregiving days. In it, I included a card with a quote that inspired me:
Barn’s burned down;
Now I can see the moon.

I shot this image last year — also while in Austria. I was filled with peace, with love, and balance. I shot this in honor of a loved one who passed away in the hours/days before it. Does it lend you these same qualities?
Around us, we can pivot and see tragedy or unfortunate circumstance. We can succumb to the stress of these events or we can focus and recompose — a sequence very common to photographers. I choose the latter. As you fill my frame, I place my own interpretation of the events — simply by that focus and recompose method. This was the beautiful part of shooting as Team Morgan in Austria last week; we two covered different angles and clicked our shutters at different moments. I can’t wait to share more about this adventure — shooting in an iglu/igloo, shooting two international couples, or driving in manual throughout two countries! Stay tuned. But in the meantime, is your glass half full or half empty? I vote that you focus and recompose.
I focus & decompose daily. Great post Heidi. Love you!
Dear Heart — I LOVE this photograph and would really love to have it on my wall. It’s beautiful. As are you. With love and gratitude for the Amazing Grace you are as you walk this planet.
